June 2013 – Outside The Watercolor Box: Marie Spaeder Haas

Can you feel color?  Can you see texture? If a painting is complete and no one is around to see it, has art been created?  Join Etowah Arts Commission as we explore ‘OUTSIDE THE WATERCOLOR BOX – recent paintings by Marie Spaeder  Haas’  on exhibit in our gallery June 27 through September 21.  Everyone is invited to experience this adventure  with Marie at the Artist’s Reception on Thursday, June 27 from 5-7pm.  Light hors d’oeurves will be served as we experience new surfaces, new subject matter and new combinations of materials with the artist’s inspirations available to further our appreciation.

Marie Spaeder  Haas is an avid watercolorist who spent most of earlier years near the shores of Lake Erie in northwestern Pennsylvania, but has recently found her home in the mountains of southeastern Tennessee.  She started painting and drawing most likely with a tube of lipstick on the walls of her childhood home and has continued through the years even while she pursued an education and career teaching high school biology in Erie, PA.  Marie started doing watercolor in her pre-teen years and continues to explore the medium in addition to drawing with pen or brush and ink.  She has also experimented with other aqueous media including acrylics and silk dyes, but keeps coming back to watercolor.  While still in Erie, she conducted watercolor and drawing classes and had her own Sycamore Gallery where she displayed her own work and the work of area artists.  “I am painting and drawing images all the time, not necessarily with any medium, but always in my mind I am considering colors, textures, shapes and forms.  I feel especially fortunate to be able to look at this beautiful creation around me and experience it as a biologist and as an artist at the same time.  It energizes and inspires me.”

Marie frequently exhibits her drawings and watercolors in solo, juried and invitational shows throughout the United States.  Her work is found in private and corporate collections in the US, Australia, Canada and Japan.  She currently works out of her studios in Ocoee, TN and Bradenton, FL.  Her work is available at KADA Gallery, Erie, PA and The Museum Center at Five Points in Cleveland, TN, as well as through her website,  www.SpaederHaasGallery.com.
