SANDY JOHNSTON BREWER – Etowah, TN
Several years ago I saw an exhibit of Polaroid photos. It changed the way I look at photographs and how I now print mine. I had already been looking for a photo in a photo, but after seeing the Polaroid exhibit I began trying new ways of printing my own photos. I found I like the results of printing on business gloss or 24# ink jet copy paper instead of photo quality paper. I like the soft blurred edges these two papers give photos. To me, they create a painterly look.
My love of Georgia O’Keefe’s flowers led me to use a macro lens. The two photos of flowers were taken with a macro lens, blown up on the color copier, and then cropped to find the photo in the photo.

The photograph of my sister sitting on a bench was taken with my cell phone. I sized it up a bit; then printed it on business gloss paper. Of all the photos I have ever taken, it is one of my most favorite because I know what it meant to her to sit at the north rim of the Grand Canyon.

Great photos are not what we see. They are great because of the way they make us feel.
